The Library will be sponsoring a Read-a-Thon with the Elementary School as a community service project. The money earned from this project will go towards supplying books for the Aldea Arthur Gough, a residential social service center in Rio Oro de Santa.

The purpose of this project is to give students the opportunity to have a positive impact in our local community and build meaningful relationships with other kids outside the CDS community.

If you would like to participate, students will need to follow these steps:

1. The students in grades 1st – 5th should ask family members, friends and neighbors to pledge money for every page that the student reads during this week. Pledges can be recorded in the linked pledge sheet.

2. From November 5th to the 9th, students READ! Students should write down the number of pages they have read on the student reading log each day or when they finish a book. At the end of the week, please add up the pages read and do the math to find the contributions (# pages x pledge/page).  For this project, we ask that you use the provided reading log instead of Biblionasium to help us record participation.

3. Over the next few weeks, the students should collect their pledges and turn the money into the Library by Wednesday, November 21st, 2018.  The money earned will go toward the community service project in the Aldea.

Besides the satisfaction in knowing that we are helping people, we will also continue building a relationship with the kids that we are helping.  During the 2nd semester, visits will be coordinated in which CDS students will be engaging in reading activities with the kids from the Aldea.

Encourage your students to read as much as they can this week to give these kids in need a chance to enjoy reading as much as your child does.

Pledge sheets and reading logs can be recorded digitally and emailed to Ms. Calderon or they can be printed and turned in to the Library. The Biblionasium log will not be counted for participation in the Read-a-thon.

If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Calderon at sara_calderon@cds.ed.cr.
