SOCIAL PURPOSE

Central to our ethos as a school, we help our students expand their worldview through varied social impact initiatives. They grow into globally conscious leaders with meaningful experiences among different communities.

LOCAL SERVICE AND STUDENT INITIATIVES

CDS students are active participants in community service and outreach projects. Many lead, take initiative, and get involved in clubs that address various social concerns, including the Zero Waste Youth Group, Student Council, Green Team, Sister School Program, Gay-Straight Alliance, Girl Up, and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). In each of these clubs, students contribute their skills, knowledge, and talents; connect with different communities; create awareness; and raise funds or goods that benefit the environment or others.

To spotlight one example of a student-led initiative, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) began when one CDS student took the lead in bringing this organization to our school. FBLA links aspiring business leaders to opportunities that develop their leadership and entrepreneurship. Practicing their abilities, FBLA students help local businesses in San José.

Our Student Council both in Middle and High School also play an important role in actively shaping the ethos of service at CDS. They design and promote community-building events, while fostering leadership and peer networks to solve problems.

CONTRIBUTING TO A BETTER WORLD

Our students learn how they can contribute their skills and talents beyond our locale and to the greater world by getting involved in Model United Nations and participating in the inspiring Social Impact Program hosted by UNICEF to support the United Nations’ Sustainable Development 2030 agenda.

Our students connect their local actions and projects to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), so they can take tangible steps that link with a larger understanding of what needs to be addressed across the world. Also, every year, in collaboration with UNICEF and other students across Nord Anglia, our students participate in a Global Challenge, joining seminars, workshops, and speaking opportunities at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Our students strive to influence world leaders to make our world a better place.

PARTNERING WITH OUR GREATER COMMUNITY

Within the CDS community, as part of our social purpose, we want every individual to belong and feel valued, and we champion the values of empathy, inclusivity, and aspiration through the highest quality learning experiences.

To live these values within San José, the CDS Educational Development Association (EDA) plays an important role in forging partnerships among our school, local educators, and businesses, so we can empower students to make meaningful contributions to the local community.

The EDA:
  • Funds full scholarships for local, talented, financially disadvantaged students from 9th grade onward.
  • Encourages service opportunities within our extended community.
  • Supports professional development opportunities for local public-school teachers.
