Happy Holidays!

I would just like to take a moment to wish you all, the happiest of holidays. The children have worked hard and earned this rest; I hope there is ample opportunity for everyone to spend quality time with their family, eat well, enjoy the outdoors and return in January ready for another semester of learning.

Thanks to your amazing Parent Reps Team!

On Thursday, parent reps are organising a lunch for teachers to wish them a happy christmas!

Just a huge THANKS to our amazing parent rep volunteer team, Susanne Van Laarhoven, Aby Rivers, Valeria Moreira, Letzi Gueits, Regina Bonilla, and Stephanie Winter. They have been working really hard to represent your views diligently to the school every month and in between!

Without them the Halloween dance, Teachers Day breakfast, and Music Under The Stars wouldn’t have been possible. Here’s to more of these excellent events in the second semester.

ECO Blog

Friday in Green Team we were met with a great debate that ended in an exciting fashion of creativity and inspiration. The question: how do we motivate students to make ECO Bricks without encouraging them to produce trash? The answer, let's show the students how easy it is to make an ECO Brick at next week's assembly. Then let's have them compete for exactly one month! The winner, one student from each grade produces the most AND heaviest ECO Bricks, will be allowed to pie a teacher of their choosing in the face! After this month of friendly competition and such an enticing reward, students will be motivated to learn and practice making ECO Bricks.

But that's not all that happened this week. Wednesday, TRUE Zero Waste International come to CDS. They gave an inspiring presentation to our entire MS and HS student body. Then, they took the HS and MS Green Teams on a schoolwide Waste Audit. We came in with 58% diversion rate, meaning that 58% of what could be waste (i.e. energy, disposable products, food) is diverted from a landfill or incinerator. We have a lot of room for improvement but it's a great start! Students of MS and HS will be put together more often in the 2nd semester to create a bridge of sustainability between the two schools. Our students are excited to be so empowered!

Some Pictures from this Week

8th Graders delivered TED Talks this week on a variety of fascinating topics. Sebastian B. taught us about bioprinting and the future of human organ transplants, while Ian taught us the science behind laughter. Others delved into what causes songs to get stuck in our heads, whether memories can be erased, and how we can learn to be better people from penguins. A few will be published on the TED website, so look out for forthcoming links!

6th grade mathematicians competed in two Kahoot competitions, practicing skills learned throughout first semester!

8th grade students celebrated wrapping up their chemistry unit by making ice cream and having a little friendly competition over the flavor which Middle School teachers were more than happy to help out with
