Amnesty International’s annual campaign to write ‘cards of solidarity’ in support of a cause

Recently our Year 10 Global Citizenship IGCSE students have been participating in Amnesty International’s annual ‘Write for Rights’ campaign.

This initiative calls for individuals around the world to learn about real cases of human rights violations happening and to take action to help their cases.

As part of this campaign, Year 10 students are sending the victims, often in prison, a ‘card of solidarity’ to let them know that people are thinking about them and supporting their cause, or writing to those who hold positions of power and authority to lobby them to take positive action.

Letters were sent to:

  • Leonard Peltier (Native American activist, imprisoned since 1977)
  • Máxima Acuña (Peruvian subsistence farmer and environmentalist)
  • Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe (British-Iranian, detained in Iran since 3 April 2016)

The students were inspired to read about the stories of these individuals and hope that their cards and letters help to make a difference in the lives of others.
