Once in a lifetime opportunity for students from Years 9 - 12

Dear DCIS Parents and Guardians,

We are delighted to write to our DCIS families (for students in Years 9 - 12) regarding a unique learning opportunity for your son/daughter. This summer UNICEF have invited Nord Anglia Education students to participate in the UN’s High Level Political Forum on sustainable development in New York in July 2017, an opportunity exclusively for NAE students. Two selected students from each school will become ‘NAE Ambassadors’ and will influence politicians, demonstrating the action that our schools are taking to tackle the United Nation’s Global Goals for sustainable development, the focus of our 2017 Global Challenge.

What is the event?

The event will take place from 12th-19th July in New York City. Students will participate in workshops, seminars and debates for the week. They will work together to deliver presentations to the UN’s High Level Political Forum. Students will also get the opportunity to see some of New York and attend a Broadway show. More information on the High Level Political Forum can be found here.

What are the costs?

All transfers, accommodation, meals and excursions in New York will be covered by NAE. The cost to students will be for flights to Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and New York, visas, travel insurance, and spending money. We estimate this cost to be approximately $3,000 SGD.

Logistics

Students will be accompanied by members of staff from NAE schools within the South East Asia Region, though not necessarily a member of DCIS staff. Students and staff will meet at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, to travel to New York and arrive on Wednesday 12th July. This means they will either need to travel with you to HCMC or travel unaccompanied. They will be greeted at JFK airport on arrival by staff from the Education Team, and will transfer to a hotel in central New York in the Midtown area. Students will be sharing twin rooms, with 2 same sex students per room.

What will the programme look like?

A draft programme and further information from NAE can be accessed online via these links.

Application process:

Each school is able to send two students to attend this event. The Ambassadors for DCIS will be decided via an application process. To be considered students should meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates significant commitment to community or global issues
  • Be an excellent role model and embody the DCIS school values and ethos
  • Be able to present, communicate, and argue diplomatically
  • Have excellent leadership skills

In addition, students must also be:

  • In Years 9, 10, 11 or 12
  • Attending DCIS next academic year (from August 2017)
  • Eligible for a US Visa
  • Become actively involved in the Global Campus Global Challenge at DCIS
  • Committed to attend the event if successful and meet the required costs

To apply for this exciting opportunity your son/daughter will need to complete the application form attached to this letter and return this via email or in hard copy to Mrs Hyland.

They will also need to submit a 3-5 minute video answering the following question:

“What makes you the DCIS Ambassador to the United Nations?”

Both of these must be completed by 8am on Friday 10th March. Videos should be uploaded to Google Drive and shared with Carla.hyland@dovercourt.edu.sg or delivered on a USB stick.

Following this application, entries will be reviewed and successful candidates will be informed the following week.

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to receiving applications for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
