At Dover Court International School (DCIS), service learning and inclusive opportunities are an essential part of how we help students grow — both as learners and as members of a wider community. Our ongoing partnership with Special Olympics Singapore (SOSG) continues to strengthen this mission by giving our students hands-on experiences in leadership, volunteering, and inclusive sport.

Developing Leadership Through Service Learning
Earlier this academic year, students from Years 10–12 took part in a training session with SOSG focused on supporting community sports programmes. The workshop introduced students to practical skills such as communication, creating safe environments, building positive interactions, and understanding the importance of routines when working with athletes.

This experience was built on an earlier mentor training session for our Year 12 IB CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) students. During this talk, SOSG shared insights from both volunteers and athletes, encouraging students to think deeply about the impact of community service. A message that stayed with many was the Special Olympics athlete oath:
“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
It’s a message that resonates strongly with our students and reflects the spirit we aim to nurture at Dover Court.

Experiencing Inclusive Sports on Campus
Recently, SOSG returned to campus to run a series of sports taster sessions. Working closely with our PE team, students and their families had the chance to try four Special Olympics sports:
The session wrapped up with a Q&A session, giving families the opportunity to learn more about the sporting pathways SOSG offers and how students can become more involved in community programmes.

Why These Experiences Matter
Opportunities like these are an important part of the Dover Court journey. Whether through CAS, volunteering, inclusive sports or community partnerships, our students develop:
These experiences help shape young people who are ready to contribute positively to the world around them. A huge thank you to our students, teachers, families and, of course, Special Olympics Singapore for being part of this meaningful partnership.
