Final wrap up of this one week trip to the United Nations in New York for 87 NAE students

87 Nord Anglia Education students from 44 NAE schools and 15 different countries all gathered in New York City to experience being a part of the changes happening in today’s world.

After having a few days of preparation, our DCIS students embarked on Day 1 of a four day conference which began with a High Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the UNICEF House where eight NAE students – including Indira from DCIS – made their presentations to Ambassadors and UN Delegates.

The UN Delegates thanked all the students for their dedication to the cause and expressed their gratitude toward this level and caliber of youth involvement.

Once the presentations ended, students had the chance to meet and speak with the UN delegates.

The first Nord Anglia Global Model United Nations (MUN) began on Day 2 with a quick briefing from the CEO of Nord Anglia Education (Andrew Fitzmaurice) and the Agenda 2030 Partnership Manager and Team Leader from UNICEF (Shannon O’Shea).

Students split into their respective UN groups, including the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the UN Security Council. Students were then guided by NYU graduates on their presentations prior to opening proceedings. The day was filled with unique contributions and pointed questions from various delegates. The debate was then adjourned to continue the following day.

On Day 3, while the delegates discussed contemporary world issues such as immunisation to combat child mortality and global food shortages, committees also addressed crisis situations that brought in fresh perspectives to the debate. The conference was brought to an end with a short awards ceremony where delegates shared their appreciation for the hard work of the Conference Chairs. The very first NAE MUN was an enlightening experience for all the students.

Day 4 started with a tour of the UN Building, where students had the chance to see four chambers of assembly: the Security Council chamber, the General Assembly Hall, the Trusteeship Council chamber and the Economic and Social Council chamber. After observing various art works donated by member states, the students returned to the UNICEF building where they took part in a series of inspiring and fascinating workshops regarding education, health, hunger and reducing inequality.

The students came away from this experience feeling privileged to have participated in the first NAE Global Goals Student Summit. An enormous thank you to all attendees, organisers and venues for having made this unique experience possible for all 87 NAE students.
