The story of Wang Fuman, an eight year old boy from Yunnan province in China, went viral last year online due to the harsh nature of his 9km round trip on foot to his local school. This viral picture earned him the nickname ‘The Ice Boy of China’.
Deborah Ellis, author of this year’s ‘One Book, One World’ title novel ‘The Breadwinner’ has set all students the challenge to consider the U.N Global Goal 4: Quality Education by using the following writing prompt to write their poem:
“Write from the perspective of a child seeking quality education”.
The Year 6 Team decided that The Ice Boy’s story would serve as the perfect inspiration for the children’s poems.
During English lessons, students watched a video report on Wang Fuman from the South China Morning Post and worked in groups to consider what it must be like to travel for over an hour each day to get to school.
The students produced some truly wonderful poetry and the Year 6 Team are very proud of their efforts. Some students even decided to record spoken performances of their fantastic work.
The Year 6 Team now begin the hard task of deciding which student poems to put forward for the worldwide Global Campus Creative Writing Competition.
Stay tuned to hear if we win!
