The Upper Primary chess club run by Miss Ripper has been one of our most popular extra-curricular activities this term. The participants finished their ECA off with a hard-fought chess tournament.

Congratulations to both Inha from 5JMG and Stivatsa from 6KK, who were the finalists in the Chess Club ECA tournament this term.

In the final, Inha successfully implemented the move, Scholar’s Mate, to checkmate his opponent. Scholar's Mate is one of the most well-known checkmates among chess players. This checkmate ends the game after only four moves! It does so by attacking the weak f7-pawn with a bishop and a queen. Well done Inha!

This ECA has been incredibly popular during Term 2, where the children have been learning about the fundamental skills needed for chess. These include visualisation, calculation and strategy. As well as these, the students have been gaining understanding of some key opening moves and learning about some special rules such as Castling, Pawn Promotion, and En Passant.

Thank you to all participants and I hope to see you again in Term 3!
