With the new school year just around the corner we share our top tips for a smooth start. Whether this is the first time starting school or you are a seasoned Primary student or parent, the start of a new academic year is always exciting and comes with some anxiety and butterflies.

Early Years and Lower Primary School

Starting school for the first time is a big step and almost as big for the parents as it is for the children. Even if your child isn't new to Dover Court there are a few things that will help them settle in and make their first week easier:

  • Tell your child about your first day in school. How did you feel? Who was your friend? What was the name of your teacher?
  • Discuss with your child all the other ‘firsts' they have experienced and reassure them that they will be able to cope as they did with the other ‘firsts’
  • Show them a photo of their new teacher, tell them the name of their teacher and talk about the name of their class
  • Your child can practice wearing their uniform at home to make them feel comfortable in it. They can also practice getting changed for swimming and putting their shoes on
  • Spend some time labelling all school items, especially hats and water bottles tend to get mixed up
  • Involve your child in planning their snacks and lunches. It's a good idea for them to practice opening and closing their water bottle and snack box
  • Many children enjoy their snack and lunch better if they know what to expect, show them what they are having to eat
  • Encourage your child to ask questions  -  at DCIS no question is too small! Any adult with a dark blue lanyard is there to help
  • Connect with the Class Parent – the details will be available from the class teacher. This will keep you in touch with class activities away from school
  • If you are anxious, your child will be anxious. Trust the teachers!

Upper Primary School

A new school year is always exciting, maybe your child has been at Dover Court for many years or maybe they are just joining us. Our experienced teachers are ready to welcome them and help them settle in to their new class. Here are some tips for your child:

  • Read through the teacher's profile together, it is a very good idea to memorise the name of your teacher and the name of your new class, that also makes it easier for staff to help you find your way on the first day of term
  • If anything is worrying you, write it down to ask your teacher, they are there to help you!
  • Spend some time making sure that uniforms and shoes fit and remember to label everything. If your shirts are new, button and unbotton them a few times, that will make it easier and quicker once you're getting dressed for school
  • If you are in Year 5 or Year 6 and bringing in your own device, rest assured that your teacher will help you set everything you need up. Just make sure that your laptop is fully charged in the morning
  • Don't worry! Your teacher will tell you all you need to know on your first day.  If you get lost or need help, you can ask any of the adults wearing blue lanyards
  • Try to talk to 3 new friends on your first day and remember their names
  • Finally, have a great first day.  Remember to smile and enjoy making new friends!

We can't wait to see all our students next week!
