The literacy intervention teacher has specialized knowledge of assessment and diagnosis that is vital for developing, implementing, and designing instruction for individual students. He or she can assess the reading strengths and needs of students and provide that information to classroom teachers, parents, and specialized personnel in order to provide an effective reading program.
The literacy intervention teacher designs and implements focused intervention instruction to remediate skill deficits, review skills for Tier I lessons, and provide multiple opportunities for practice with immediate corrective feedback. This intervention is delivered in a small group setting averaging three to five students and offered for thirty to forty-five minutes, three to five times a week. This instruction is offered in addition to Tier I classroom instruction. Progress is monitored on a regular cycle (6 weeks) using a variety of reading assessments. Students are screened on classroom reading assessments and any students falling into “beginning” are given additional drill down diagnostic assessment to pinpoint needs. Students are then provided with Tier 2 reading intervention.
