Visit to the exhibition “From Raphael to Gauguin”

On Thursday 19th February, the 5 graders went to the Hermitage Museum to visit the exhibition, “From Raphael to Gauguin”, the private collection of Jean Bonna, a collector from Geneva.

Students, who had already been introduced to using charcoal (fading, peeling, scratching), were made aware of other techniques, such as: pastel, chalk, watercolor and gouache, that the artists of the exhibition used to do the sketches of their major works.

The students were amazed by the beauty and precision of the unfinished drawings by Raphael for the Sistine Chapel, the remarkable self portrait of Gustave Courbet using charcoal, and the naturalistic paintings of Hans Hoffmann and the preparatory work of Gauguin.
