We left as a small group at the end of the day on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, a total of 21 people, in a good mood and ready to discover a new country, an unknown city. Having landed in the evening and after a good night's sleep, it is in the morning and in the grey weather that we discovered Porto from our hotel which overlooked the city.
The first part of the day takes us on foot to the banks of the famous river, the Douro, a river line crossing the city from west to east to finally pour a few kilometres away in the Atlantic Ocean. Our guide takes us to the student neighbourhood, the cathedral, the famous train station of Sao Bento with its walls strewn with catelles showing parts of the glorious history of Portugal; finally the port district of Ribeira with its numerous stalls and coloured houses along the docks.
After a break, we embark on a visit to the Ferreira winery, one of the producers of the most famous elixir whose city holds the name: Porto; tasting and then cable car ride to Jardim do Morro. We end our day together in a good restaurant of local cuisine and walk back to our hotel crossing the Dom Luis Bridge with a splendid by night view over the Douro and the city.
We start the second day with a river cruise then we take the subway to reach a magical place - Matosinhos Beach. The ocean awaits us and despite the cool water, we all put our suit for an initiation to surfing of an hour and a half. What an experience! Sometimes, the awesome waves, with their full power, push us back towards the beach. The natural element absorbs us and makes us feel its great strength.
Only a few students were able to get up on their board, despite that everyone had a lot of fun. Porto, Matosinhos, surf, fun and good time! Those beautiful pictures are forever etched in our minds!
