NAE STEAM Festival China

Day one started out with an opening ceremony where the 8 Nord Anglia China Schools were welcomed by Andrew Fitzmaurice the CEO of NAE and Aimee Gillespie from MIT.

Students then displayed their superhero work they had accomplished at their own schools in a comic-con type event. Students were able to learn and gather ideas from other students on how they were able to build things to make their normal powers into superhero powers. After lunch students attended workshops which included: Drone programming, Sphere robotics/battle bots, micro-bits discovery and programming, coding and game development and underwater robotics/drones.  Students spent the day learning more in depth about using these things for everyday problem solving and engineering. In the late afternoon students and teachers departed for the AIA Great European carnival in Hong Kong where they broke into groups and were escorted around the carnival by experts that explained the science behind the rides. This was excellent learning about the engineering process that students can use later to become more advanced with their STEAM careers.  Students were then allowed to spend some time at the carnival having dinner, playing games and enjoying the rides.

Day two revolved around the build challenge. Students were posed a challenge whereby they had to design a vehicle that would house an egg and protect it during 3 separate tests. These tests included travelling the farthest distance down a ramp, surviving a fall from 3 stories (the slower the fall the higher the vehicle scored) and floating in water (weights were added periodically to test the designs).  The students used the design process of ideate, prototype, test to help scaffold their thinking and actions. It was a highly energetic and creative day which resulted in a wide variety of designs from all the students.

The final day saw the students challenged with various logic puzzles throughout the NAISHK campus. One of these challenges was based on the infamous ‘hack’ where MIT students have put things, such as a firetruck, on the great dome for all of Boston to see! Students had to build their own tower from random materials to hoist a small plastic cow up to a height of 50cm and stand on its own for 10 seconds. Well done to Manuel’s team for winning this challenge. The festival then ended with an awards ceremony where the top 3 teams for grade 5 and 8 were rewarded. Unfortunately, LIS did not place in the top 3, but we came away with a lot of new learning and are looking forward to future Nord Anglia China STEAM Festivals next year.
