Meet Our Teacher - Jonathan Rodrigues

Q:What brings you to Léman International School Chengdu?

Having been a resident and working in education in Chengdu for the last 10 years I have seen Léman International School grow into one of the best international schools in Chengdu. Léman’s DP results in the last two years were above the world average and showcased their ability as a school and the quality of teachers they have. This is what attracted me to work here and I feel privileged to be provided this opportunity to work in Léman. In addition, being part of the Nord Anglia group shows me that Léman has the appropriate tools and facilities to help me as a teacher to provide an excellent education for the students.

Q:Can you please introduce yourself to our LIS community?

My name is Kam I am from Leicester in England and have been living in Chengdu for the last 10 years. I am very passionate about education and feel that through education we can solve the problems and issues which surround the world. I believe if we equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge, then they can make rational decisions to help mankind.

Q:Why did you choose Nord Anglia Education to expand your career?

Nord Anglia is a reputable company that allows teachers to grow and exercise their teaching ability. Teaching is a profession where there is always the need for constant growth and professional development. Education has new theories, classroom practices, and philosophies that adapt to modern times and a teacher is required to keep up to date with these concepts. The company offers a multitude of learning resources for teachers to develop themselves which I feel is important for all teachers. Also, Nord Anglia offers pathways for leadership which is something I am looking forward to progress in.

Q:How are you going to work with your students to encourage them “To Be Ambitious”?

The term growth mindset is a term that is widely used in a classroom setting to help students to keep growing and achieve the best of their ability. This is something that I will adapt in my classroom and emphasize that in order to grow we need to make mistakes and learn from them. I tend to refer back to famous people who endured a difficult time in their profession but never gave up and now are people who have revolutionized the world. These examples can be people such as J.K Rowling, Jack Ma, and Albert Einstein. From this, student can see that to be ambitious they will need to make mistakes and learn from them.

Q:What do you like to do outside of school?

I am a firm believer in mindfulness and actively meditate and use yoga to enrich the internal aspect of my life. Also, I like to engage in exercise and watch sports with football being my favourite sport. I am a huge fan of Liverpool Football Club and try to keep up to date with the games even though I am living on the opposite side of England. My passion lies in history as that is a subject I thoroughly enjoy and learning about famous people and the contributions they have made to society.

Q: What do you plan to bring to the school?

My plan to bring to the school is someone positive, dedicated, responsible, and hard-working. These traits are important to help our students grow along with helping Léman continue being a reputable school. As teachers, we are role models for our students and we should act the way we expect our students to behave. My responsibility as a teacher will allow the students to understand their responsibility as students and members of their community. Being positive is important and as humans we tend to pick on negative aspects, I would build positivity in the students through mindfulness and looking at how we can control our negative emotions. Dedication and hard work are imperative to succeed and through working hard I hope this can brush off on the students to understand the importance of hardwork.
