Country Day School offers an excellent athletic program that includes Physical Education classes

Our robust after school sports program includes Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Cross Country/Track and Swimming.

Physical Education classes are guided to improve the students’ overall fitness and develop gross motor skills, social and emotional well-being and healthy lifestyles. Students are encouraged to participate in sports activities and conduct themselves in a sportsman-like manner, take part and show responsibility towards the team, to excel physically and emotionally, learning the importance of self-respect, respect for teammates, friends and other teams.

Active Living Begins In Early Childhood

In the Early Childhood, we believe that the purpose of athletics is to teach children sportsmanship and give them the opportunity to play both on a team and as an individual, as well as to build skill - all while having fun! Young children need to learn to use their bodies through both gross and fine motor skills. We will not promote the idea of “winning” or “losing” at any level in Early Childhood. We will focus on the student learning to enjoy athletics and being a member of a team.

Middle School and High School Competitions

Students participate in tournaments in Costa Rica and in the Central America area.  Country Day School teams have won several trophies and, in the last three years have won consecutively the Sportsmanship Award in volleyball, cross country and basketball. All middle school students take PE twice each six day rotation. The sports are basketball, soccer, and volleyball. We also offer a coed swimming program through the year.

A Lifelong Love Of Sports

The High School course progressively gives students the opportunity to learn, to attain good overall fitness levels and to encourage a lifetime of fitness. Students will develop various athletic skills and reach personal goals that can guide them through their lives. Students will complete the Presidential National Fitness test as part of the course.

Sport and Spirit Days

On days when we have a home athletic game students may wear their red spirit shirts, or a CDS team shirt. These days will be requested by STUCO and require the approval of administration. Athletes participating in the game may wear their team shirts (but not team shorts or sweatpants) on days we have a home or away game. Students must wear regular school pants or shorts.

For AASCA pep rallies students may wear a team jersey or the red spirit shirt. Students are permitted to wear jeans without rips, tears or holes on days we have a pep rally.

Lifetime Sports

Lifetime Sports is a course that is designed for students interested in pursuing fitness and physical education. Although CDS requires one credit in PE, we strongly encourage students to pursue physical fitness as a lifetime pursuit. The goal of this course is to foster an appreciation for lifelong physical activity by exposing students to a wider variety of activities like badminton, fitness, soccer and basketball. Fitness testing and skill assessments will be a part of this course with standards that are unique to the course.
