'Nederlandse Taal en Cultuur lessen' (NTC) is a unique programme to NAS that provides a framework for Dutch children in Jakarta to learn about Dutch culture, continue development of Dutch language skills and allow for easier transition upon returning to the Netherlands.
NTC classes operate in addition to the standard curriculum and are run by our experienced team of teachers for three hours once per week. Younger learners expand their vocabulary in a play based way through fun and engaging activities whilst older students focus on spelling, grammar, reading and writing in Dutch.
Supporting mother tongue language literacy goes beyond preserving cultural connections. Research increasingly demonstrates that continuing language and literacy in the first language alongside the development of the new language is in children’s best academic interests. The more children develop their mother tongue academically and cognitively at an age appropriate level, the more successful they will be in academic achievement in their second language.
NTC classes are made available for Dutch students studying outside NAS from group 1 – 8 Dutch Primary education, year 1 -3 and higher for Secondary education (subject to sufficient registration). Dutch Language lessons are already incorporated in the regular education programme for children at our English stream primary classes.
Students are tested in the same manner as children in the Netherlands as the classes utilize Dutch books and methods. Students are able to engage in their mother tongue and gain a sense of community by working in groups, a benefit online programmes cannot offer.
Parents are kept up to date with their child’s progress through weekly letters that provide an overview of the week’s learning and an overview of homework tasks. We warmly encourage parents to support children with weekly homework tasks to reinforce lessons and to make use of the extensive on-site library with many Dutch books available.
