The Aliens are Coming!

24 March 2014

Students in Pre-Nursery through to Year 6 have just enjoyed a science fiction-themed Literacy Week, inspired by our visiting author, Robin Price.

  • Students enjoying science fiction literacy week

In Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception (‘kindergarten’) the pupils were visited by a storm trooper (who read them the story Aliens Love Underpants!), enjoyed spaceship role play, designed and made alien creations and learned about the solar system!

In Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) the children were entertained in The Globe Theatre by Robin Price, the author of ‘Roobarb and Custard – When Custard was Grounded.’ The Year 1s were then inspired to enjoy a carousel of activities that involved writing character descriptions, making and eating custard, and re-enacting Robin’s story through role-play. Meanwhile, Year 2 pupils worked in groups to create their own Roobarb and Custard short films.  Each group role played story ideas, planned scenes, produced scripts, illustrated scenes and recorded their voices with great fun and enthusiasm! The children thoroughly enjoyed the whole process of seeing their initial story ideas become films that they could watch and share with the class.

In Year 3 the aliens landed! All activities focused on H. G Wells’ story, ‘The War of the Worlds’, where the aliens were supposedly landing on Earth from Mars. The students wrote alien poetry, recorded an on-the-scene TV report at the site of an ‘alien invasion’ and made a stop-motion animation about aliens. One group of Years 3 students spent the day writing scripts to retell The War of the Worlds,, which they performed at the end of the day.

In Year 4 the children looked at science fiction through the genre of comic strips. They focused on developing a character through various speaking, listening and drama techniques before creating either their own or collaborative comics. The children were very enthusiastic and created some amazing comics, which are now on display in the Year 4 corridor.

In Years 5 and 6, teachers ran a variety of Literacy-based workshops, ranging from poetry to painting, and music to mask making.
