This year marks the launch of our collaboration with Juilliard in Drama at Regents. This creates fabulous learning opportunities for our students as actors, designers and directors.  In their lessons, they learn about performance through experiment and discovery so that their learning is their own. We find this leads to greater independence, creativity and a higher quality of performance work. Students develop their abilities to communicate in complex and powerful ways, to work productively, co-operatively and proactively in teams and they hone their skills in analysis and evaluation.

Drama is part of the taught curriculum and all pupils participate in drama performances. There are a range of opportunities, not only to act but also to be involved backstage. Each year numerous shows, productions, performances are put on and recent past performances have included: Dr Korczak’s Example, Alice in Wonderland, The Tempest, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and this years’ main, Whole School production is an original adaptation of The Snow Queen which brings together our students’ creativity in Music, Dance and Drama.

This year also marks the launch of Drama teaching in Primary school. This year, Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 are enjoying specialist Drama lessons that are linked to the topics they’re learning about across the curriculum.  We look forward to increasing this provision next school year.

In Years 7, 8 and 9, students’ abilities to create, perform and evaluate theatre are honed while they explore a range of theatre styles including clowning, mask, puppetry, physical theatre and naturalism. Their learning supports English with theatrical exploration of Shakespeare and Simon Stephen’s play Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime.  We also develop students' devising skills while exploring relevant global issues for example, the current international refugee crisis. Through this work, students gain insight into a complex political situation while simultaneously creating work built on their empathy, sensitivity and imagination. We are also developing cross-curricular links with Music and Dance in a performance project for Year 9.

For those students opting for Drama as an IGCSE, this course is designed so that a practical focus is at its very heart. Performance projects grow in scale, creating the opportunity for groups to work with significant independence to produce their own, high quality work to a deadline. They also develop their ability to write analytically and evaluatively about performance work and to write about their ideas for staging scripts as actors, directors and designers. Drama at this level encourages creativity, focusing on practical work and developing skills that will support progression to further study of drama and the arts.

At IB level we encourage artistic discovery through experimentation, risk-taking and the presentation of ideas. The IBDP theatre course is multifaceted, providing students with the opportunity to actively engage in Theatre as creators, designers, directors and performers.

The Drama Department has two Drama classrooms, and as multifunctional spaces they can be used as discreet intimate performance spaces, ideal for presentations of classwork and examination pieces.  An additional performing space is The Globe Theatre, offering 250 fixed seating spaces used for: school productions, musical concerts, recitals, visiting theatre companies and speakers.  It houses 2 dressing rooms and a selection of costumes and props. There is a technical box that controls lighting and a sound system, a large screen and projector for film clips and presentations are also located within the Globe. The tertiary facility is a flexible teaching space, named the ‘Round House’ a hexagonal room in the centre of the school, comprising of staging and a PA system.
