My first important squash tournament
Last week I played the 2013 SECA Junior Squash Cup. It was the second time that I had played in an official tournament, but it was the first time that I had met very strong opponents. I played first in my age group on Saturday, the Boys Under 13, which was not too difficult, since in China at present there are not strong players of this age.
I was very happy to win the gold medal in my group, especially because the winner and the runner up were admitted to play in the Boy’s Under 15 the second day.
Playing BU15 was much more difficult. There were three-four other strong players, two from China, one from Malaysia and one from Canada. It was tough for me, but I was so happy to reach the final that I jumped for joy when I won the semi-final. I lost the final, but I tried my best, giving a hard game to my opponent, the number 1 of China Junior National Team. My Malaysian team mate and good friend Matthew, won the bronze medal.
It was a great feeling playing so well and going back home with one gold and one silver medal. My father, who has been my coach since I started squash training, and my mother, who has always been supporting me, were so happy too.
Squash needs serious training and dedication to reach a competitive level. I actually went into a squash court for the first time when I was few years old, because my entire family is enthusiastic about squash (my elder brother was number 1 of China National Team).
After few years just playing occasionally, I started training regularly under my father's coaching when I was 10.
I regularly train not less than 3 times a week and when I am on holiday I train 4 or 5 times a week. My father as a coach is very demanding, especially in technique and game tactic, but he also knows me very well and understands when I need to be pushed or to relax a little.
I love this game and I love the feeling of achieving success together with my team after so much effort!
