Can we Group Animals?

Yes! Year 1 have been investigating how things change and grow. Together they have explored the school grounds looking for signs of life and unearthing different animal habitats. This information was used to write sentences about what they had discovered.

The children were encouraged to think of different questions they would like to answer throughout the topic. One of them was about grouping animals. First the children looked at how animals could be grouped according to their characteristics:

How many legs do they have?

Do they have fur?

How do they move?

From this we were able to identify that animals can be classified in to these groups: amphibians, mammals, reptiles, insects, fish and birds. Great cooperation skills were used to sort and organise the animals into the different groups. The children are now aware of how to classify animals using different criteria!
