As you will all know, the Summer Fun Day is scheduled for the 4th June, which promises to be a great day! Many students took part in the poster competition across the school to advertise the event across Shanghai. I am honoured as both his Year Leader and Art teacher to announce that Warren Gichana is this year’s design competition winner. His design features all things summer and Shanghai – outdoor sports, colourful rainbow and cool motor scooter. Congratulations Warren!
I will now leave you to enjoy the ‘Student Reporter’ section of our newsletter. This week, members of 7B share their highlights of school life over the past few weeks.
Student Reporter
In German this week we learnt and practiced the eating and drinking topic. We made a dialogue and practiced them to show on Friday. We pretended that we were in a cafe and practiced ordering foods.
Jack Lee – 7B
This week in Art we learnt about different illustration styles and how to draw like Tim Burton. I really like this style and it's a new kind of drawing for me.
Marlene Liu – 7B
In Geography, we have been learning about the water cycle. We have been creating stories about the life of a water molecule going through the cycle.
Sebastian Carmargo - 7B
View from the Classroom
French
We are learning about Food and have been creating the ideal sandwich using the partitive article correctly.
Spanish
Year 7 have been practising how to combine present and future tenses to discuss what we like to do in our free time.
Design and Technology
Students have been learning how to draw an object in 3D using isometric projection. Next week they will be learning the art of rendering to represent the materials they have used.
Art
Year 7 have been creating some very successful Tim Burton-style characters over the past fortnight.
Student of the Fortnight
This fortnight a massive well done goes to Amanda Yong. Not only has Amanda been consistently working hard across all subjects this year, but she has also taken opportunities to participate in competitions within the Shanghai community. Recently, she has been very successful in the ‘Young Eye Photography Competition’. Well done Amanda!
Global Campus
With a great artistic talent in Year 7 I just wanted to remind you all about the Visual Arts Competition currently on Global Campus. Good luck!
What do you need to do?
This year we are challenging you to illustrate the winning stories that will be published in the Creative Writing anthology this year.
This year you are not limited to illustrations. You can create sculptures, take photographs, make a mosaic etc.!
The piece of visual arts you create must be inspired by one of the winning stories. You can choose a story to work from and find out more by visiting Global Campus.
Try to choose a story from a student at a different school to your own. One image per story will be chosen to go alongside it in the book, so to be in with a better chance, try to choose a story different than your friends and classmates.
You don't have to illustrate a story from your age group, you can choose a story from a different age category if you would like to.
Read to Feed
This term, we will be raising awareness and funds for one of our partner projects, Read to Feed. Read to Feed is a sponsored read organised by the agricultural charity Heifer International.
Heifer International works in China with impoverished rural communities, helping them to become self-reliant and sustainable in their farming practices. They do this through donating livestock to farmers and teaching families how to care for the livestock without harming the environment. Each family receiving the gift of animals agrees to pass on offspring or an equivalent to another family.
Last year, as a school we raised an amazing 29,832RMB which went to supplying farmers in Yanglin Village (2,300km from Shanghai) with Tibetan pigs. Families in this village live in very difficult conditions, with farmers often earning only a few thousand RMB per year. The gift of a pig, may seem quite simple but it can help to raise a family’s economic prospects, send their children to school and break the cycle of poverty. More importantly, the project is sustainable as each recipient family also returns the favour to others in the village, thus helping an entire village to escape poverty.
This week we are launching this year’s Read to Feed programme and we hope that all students in Y7-Y9 will get involved. Each student will receive sponsorship packs from their Form Tutors. There will be individual and class prizes and certificates for most books read and funds raised.
Students will need to return their completed sponsorship forms and donations by Friday 27th May 2016. This can be returned to their Form Tutor or to the Secondary School Secretaries.
Thank you for helping us to make a difference!
