Year 6 Week Ahead Information

An overview of the week ahead in Year 6

  • Year 6 elect their candidates for Head Boy and Head Girl

Information and Reminders

Year 6 have had a busy week of work and are now back into the daily routine of hard work, learning and improvement. On Wednesday 31st August we nominated candidates for Head Boy and Head Girl. Andrew Tsui and Kai Beaumont were selected for the boys; Bethany Poisson and Jana Baden for the girls.  On Thursday 1st September they addressed the Primary school assembly to further make their case for selection. Students will cast their votes next week.

Please be reminded to contact the finance office if you have not yet confirmed your child’s attendance for the Project Week Trip.

We would really appreciate parents’ support in helping their child make healthy choices when choosing a snack to eat at breaktime. Please remember that children should not be sharing snacks as we have a number of children with food allergies. Thank you for your help with this.

In English we will continue to explore story genres, reading example texts including fantasy and sci-fi genres.

Students’ ongoing English homework will be to read stories in different genres to complete a bingo grid. House Points will be given to those who complete the entire sheet. Please support your child by asking them about the content of the texts they have read before signing off on the worksheet.

In guided reading, we will continue to explore the mysterious story of Barney and Stig, and follow their developing friendship. Groups will be supported by an adult to practise close analysis of the text.

For parents of those students who have been given banded reading books, please remind your child to return them to school when the books have been finished, to enable us to swap for fresh titles. Thank you to those who have shared in their child’s learning by listening to them read or asked questions about the text.



In mathematics we will be covering and revising written arithmetic to ensure all students reach the expected standard. Later in the week we will incorporate negative numbers and begin to explore Lowest Common Multiples (LCM) and highest common factors (HCF). We will continue to practise mental maths fluency and times table speed and accuracy.



In topic lessons, we will continue to explore the Ancient Mayan civilisation. We will examine Mayan codices, which were their equivalent of a book, made of thin tree bark. Children will then have a chance to make their own.

Later in the week we will study the Mayan number system, which uses base 20, instead of our familiar base 10 system. The Mayans were also among the first to represent the concept of ‘zero’. Students will find out how the Mayan system worked and compare it to our modern number system.

Some topic vocabulary which we will be using includes: artefact, archaeology, architecture, civilisation, codices, culture, customs, domestication, empire, rituals.
