Maths
Next week in Maths we will be developing our understanding of place value and partitioning to develop methods for addition and subtraction with larger numbers. We will also focus on developing our recall of the 4 and 8 times tables by playing games such as 'Fizz Buzz' and 'Ping Pong'. We will develop our understanding of addition and subtraction in practical contexts at the end of the week by trying to solve real-life problems involving these calculations.
English
We will begin reading 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes. Our objective for the week will be to develop descriptive writing, which we will do by identifying similes in the text. The children will then write their own similes to describe the Iron Man. We will also read a poem called 'The Coming of the Iron Man' to help inspire us. The children will have opportunities to create short role plays based on the story as well as explore how they can use a range of conjunctions (when, if, before, although) to extend sentences with more than one clause.
Topic
We will begin our topic work next week by developing our skills in retrieving information from the Internet. We will be learning how to find accurate and specific information by searching for key words, and developing our use of search engines.
As historians, we will look at past inventions and compare present inventions. We will then learn about the history of flight. We will be researching some of the early pioneers of flight and their attempts, and creating some short role plays based on it. We will then develop a time line of the development of flight and record our work in the form of a comic strip. Some of us will be using the app 'Comic Life' on the iPads - if anybody has access to this it would be a great opportunity to get practicing!
