6B – Jiahui Yin – for outstanding effort in all lessons

6C – Sebastian – for writing a captivating and riveting story with excellent suspense.

In English we will continue to explore story genres, reading example texts including scary stories (but not too scary of course!), and humorous tales. Students will apply their learning of story structure and language features to practise creating their own genre stories. We will be sharing our writing and asking for peer feedback to improve our stories.

In guided reading, we will continue to explore the mysterious story of Barney and Stig, as they work together to build a chimney in Stig’s cave. Students will practise reading aloud with intonation and expression, and interrogate the text to find pertinent details to answer comprehension questions.

For parents of those students who have been given banded reading books, please remind your child to return them to school when the books have been finished, to enable us to swap for fresh titles. Thank you to those who have shared in their child’s learning by listening to them read or asked questions about the text.

In mathematics we will be working on number sense as students are settling into their provisional groupings. Sets will be confirmed after next week.Students will look at the order of operations (BIDMAS), and consolidate their understanding of factors, multiples and primes. We will continue to practise mental maths fluency and times table speed and accuracy.

In our AD900 unit, we will finish our work on the Ancient Mayan civilisation, and move on to study the Kingdom of Benin, in West Africa. Students will be able to locate the Benin Kingdom on a map of Africa and place its significance on a timeline of African history. We will also learn some key facts and terms about the Benin Kingdom (such as definitions of Ogiso and Edo.) We will also have time to look at the religion of Benin, and make some early comparisons to the Ancient Mayan belief system.

Some topic vocabulary which we will be using includes: artefact, archaeology, architecture, civilisation, codices, culture, customs, domestication, empire, rituals.
