Year 5 Week Ahead Information

24 February 2017

An overview of the week ahead in Year 5

  • Year 5 are 'human' experts

Information and Reminders

We currently have a focus on using our manners around the school and we are encouraging the primary students to say please and thank you; to hold the doors open for someone else as they walk through and to meet and greet people politely – saying good morning or good afternoon. We are also encouraging our primary students to use good table manners at lunch time.

We are also checking that our students are all dressed appropriately in the correct school uniform. Students should not be wearing non-uniform items inside classes (jumpers, hats, trainers). Any students will be asked to remove such items of clothing. All students should also have a warm coat to wear at break and lunchtimes.

5B – Sarah – for being confident at attempting more challenging work

In English next week we will continue to read ‘Pig-Heart Boy’ by Malorie Blackman. We are not at the part where Cameron is about to have his heart transplant, but will his life ever be the same afterwards? Using the novel, we will be learning about the features of newspaper reports and writing our own. We will also hold our very own press conference based on the events that have occurred in the story.

Spelling: distinguishing between the suffixes -cious or -tious

Next week’s maths lessons will concentrate on using our knowledge of fractions, decimals and percentages to complete calculations. This will include adding and subtracting fractions with the same and different denominator; multiplying fractions; converting fractions, decimals and percentages so that calculations can be completed; and calculating using real life problems.  To help with the children’s understanding we will be using a balance of practical activities and problem solving opportunities.

Next week in topic, we will be investigating the respiratory system; sketching and labelling the different parts of the lungs and understanding their functions. We will then carry out an investigation into lung capacity. Later on in the week, the children will be exploring characteristics that are inherited from their parents. We will also be considering the impact of the environment on the human body.
