Guest Blog: NAIS Pudong Library Opening Ceremony Report by Heart to Heart

05 June 2018

Heart to Heart traveled to Xingan County (near Ji’an City) in Jiangxi to visit Miaoxi Primary School on 2018 May 22. We were welcomed by school board officials, the headmaster, the assistant headmaster, teachers, and students. As the weather was warm, the H2H / NAIS library dedication ceremony was held outside in the school courtyard. The ceremony began with speeches by the school board and headmaster, who said this was a very important day for their school and for future generations. Karen Carrington then gave a speech on behalf of Heart to Heart and NAIS.

The RMB 20,000 for the NAIS library donation was exchanged during the speech for the book listing and fapiaos. (They had bought a large number of books as well as 2 computers with the money!) During the ceremony, several books were stamped with the book stamp that was made for the event. (All books will be stamped to commemorate the NAIS donation.) After the speeches, the Heart to Heart volunteers were given the opportunity to interact with the students while handing out small gifts. Each student received a beanie, stationary set, biros (red, black and blue) and a soft toy. Many of the students expressed their thanks in English and a big smile. A total of 50 large bags of donated items such as clothing, school supplies, toiletries and toys were gifted to the school by Heart to Heart. Everyone at the school seemed extremely pleased.

The school was originally built in 1969 but was moved and modernized in 2008. It is a 3 story white building, with the library situated on the second floor. Due to another charity grant, the school is currently in the process of having a canteen built, which is situated on the opposite side of the courtyard from the classroom block. Overall the school is in great condition being well maintained and clean. The staff and students are obviously proud of their school

Education is being actively promoted in Jiangxi Province at present. It is obvious that the school will take good care of the books and computers that they purchased with the donation money. The library itself is very new with most of the NAIS books already catalogued and on the shelves. There is also a notice of the NAIS donation on the wall of the library. An insurance company sponsored the purchase of tables, chairs and bookshelves so the library is a very welcoming space.

The only books the school previously had were extremely old and donated by the government years ago. They were not used. With the NAIS donation the headmaster focused on buying books that would inspire the children to read. The headmaster was very excited about the opportunity to make a real library so we have no doubt that library and computers will be used extensively.

The visit to the school was very nice. The students and teachers were very enthusiastic and grateful that they had been chosen to receive the books. They were sorry no one from NAIS was able to join the ceremony and wanted to make sure we thanked you for your very thoughtful donation. They will treasure it for years to come!
