Daniel Guiney

Daniel Guiney

History Teacher

Daniel taught History in the UK, Singapore, and Egypt prior to joining NAIS Pudong in 2016 in order to teach and learn more about China, a country with a uniquely rich past. Daniel’s most memorable teaching experiences include leading students into the burial chamber of Khafre’s pyramid, guiding a team of Singaporeans to the Hong Kong Asian History Bowl final, and teaching both British and German students about the First World War at Bayernwald cemetery. Daniel is especially proud of the record-breaking results the History Department have achieved year after year here at NAIS Pudong.

As an Apple Certified teacher Daniel relishes embracing technological shifts to support learning and is a keen advocate of the flipped classroom. He remains an associate examiner for both the CIE and EdExcel IGCSE exam boards as well as for the IBO and has been teaching since the year 2000. Daniel is a proud recipient of the Her Majesty Queen Mother Great War Scholarship and runs the History Bowl CCA after school for students who wish to represent their school in annual academic tournaments.

Daniel feels extremely fortunate to have worked with so many inspiring students, parents, and teachers in his previous roles as Head of Year, Head of Humanities, Head of Learning Support, Gifted and Talented coordinator, EAL champion, and Child Protection Officer. He has also worked on several NAIS Pudong Summer School programmes and has led experiential learning to Sanya during Project Weeks. Teaching History remains his passion however and although Daniel is a secondary specialist he has greatly enjoyed helping embed History through STEAM in Years 3 and 4 as well as when leading History lessons to Year 6 students during transition days.

When not working he enjoys spending time with his wife and young daughter. Daniel is a keen contributor to Teaching History and the British Journal of Pastoral Education and enjoys podcasting. Daniel is a lifelong Aston Villa FC supporter and is happiest watching Test cricket with a flask of tea, a piccalilli sandwich, and a crossword.
