Mia Björkman

Mia Bjorkman

Teacher of Music

Mia is a professional violinist/violist and passionate about holistic music education. She holds a Masters degree in performance and completed her thesis on holistic education in violin pedagogy. She has trained extensively as holistic music educator, including courses and workshops with the founder of the Colourstrings violin method, Gèza Szilvay, and with the head of the International Kodály Institute, James Cuskelly. Mia has more than ten years of teaching and performing experience and was a permanent member of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in South Africa. She has performed  in prestigious venues in South Africa, Germany, Spain and Lebanon and  has collaborated with artists such as Joshua Bell (international soloist), Pieter Schoeman (concert master of London Philharmonic Orchestra), and Rèka Szilvay (professor at Sibelius Academy). Mia is a founding member and Head of Junior Strings of the esteemed Annual Gauteng Chamber Music Festival in South Africa.

Mia finds that the educational philosophy of Nord Anglia aligns with her expertise as holistic music educator, and as such has chosen to be part of a school which not only excels in academics, but honours the importance of the arts in the education of young pupils. Nord Anglia's emphasis on excellence is highlighted by the collaboration with esteemed institutions such as Juilliard, to ensure pupils receive world-class music education.

Mia enjoys listening to music and often attends concerts by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, of which her husband is a member. In her free time she enjoys practicing yoga and studying Mandarin. She is a green tea and Earl Grey fanatic, and can often be found in a cozy café indulging her sweet tooth.
