When I arrived last year I was very nervous because this is the first time I have ever lived abroad and in particular it was quite a cultural shock moving from my home town in England to Shanghai, one of the biggest mega cities in the world. Despite my obvious nerves about coming to a new school I was one of many new students starting out. Arriving at this school has widened my horizons to other cultures, as being an international school there is a great diversity in the different nationalities represented and it is interesting to discover about other people’s home countries.
Shanghai is an amazing place to live with so many great opportunities, I’m currently a student at Jin bao Long ballet studio in Gubei and I also sail at Dianshan Lake. Last year I took part in the Global Classroom Dance Unites competition which BISS Puxi succeeded in winning! It was great fun and I got to know a lot more people in the process.
There are lots of opportunities for people to play different sports and plenty of ECAs for students interested in other subjects. In my first term at BISS Puxi I took part in the Chinese cooking club where I learnt how to cook lots of traditional Chinese dishes. As one of my IGCSE options, I chose to take geography and last year we went on a great field trip to the source of a river in the mountains where we stayed for a couple of days, then followed the river downstream to the water town of Wuzhen where we studied the tourism of the town. It was a really fun and interesting trip and it was enlightening to travel to the mountains away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Similarly I took part in the bronze international award and am currently working my way to achieving my silver. At the end of the award we go on a hike and last year we took a trip up into the mountains for two days trekking. It was challenging but a great trip where we learnt survival skills and how to work well together as a team.
Overall BISS Puxi offers unique opportunities that I would not have experienced if I hadn’t come here, it is a welcoming school and everyone helps each other to settle in.
