Year 5 In the Lab

20 October 2014

Year 5 are currently investigating the reaction between baking soda and vinegar in Science lessons and class 5U have got the investigations off to a flying start. They tell us all about it below.

  • Year 5 students at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi experimenting in the new science labs.
  • Year 5 students at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi experimenting in the new science labs.

We started in the classroom just pouring the reagents together and seeing what happened. In the end we realised that as fun as our explorations had been, we had more information to answer questions with and we couldn't actually show any evidence to support our arguments in the classroom, so we moved to the new science labs!

We planned our first investigation, learning the names of the equipment we would use and considering how to make it a fair test that only changed one variable.

The next day we moved down to the science labs and, after a quick health and safety course, carried out our experiment.

“It's awesome! It's like we get to do real science! And I made a real explosion and I've never done that before. I love science now. I can't wait to do the bigger explosion. It's the best science I've ever done.” - Lorenzo

“Science is cool. I want to do this in my house!” - Kevin

“I like the science lab because it's like a real science lab and we get to use real equipment. I got to test my ideas and I think it was fun. I think it's awesome having real scientists teach us.” - Kaya
