Our Principal Writes: Nord Anglia Education’s Tanzania Student Programme

24 October 2014

Last week I attended the bi-annual Nord Anglia Education’s (NAE) Senior Leadership Meeting which this year took place in Tanzania, where NAE have a significant programme that supports the education and development of underprivileged Tanzanian children.

It was my first visit to sub Saharan Africa and it was a truly memorable experience; it is a beautiful country, the people are generally so happy and so welcoming. They also have a calmness and gentleness that immediately strikes you when you meet them. It is also a poor country with many disadvantaged and orphaned children who are in need of support particularly in terms of education.

The trip gave me the opportunity to experience the sort of visit that seven of our students enjoyed in February 2014 when they joined students from across the Nord Anglia Education family of schools at the Shamba Kipara Farm Camp near Arusha in northern Tanzania to undertake community support work and experience East African culture.

During our stay we were able to visit the Haruma Orphanage which has been rebuilt and where I met some of the children who are currently benefitting from the support and facilities that have been created by NAE's charitable arm Nordstar and the work that Nord Anglia students have undertaken. We also visited a number of schools that have already had, or are about to receive, support from NAE. All of the projects undertaken are designed to provide sustainable education and training for young people in the area. Nordstar provides over a million US dollars of support each year and our students have the chance to contribute directly through their work and their connection with the children who are being supported through this much valued programme.

This year we will be offering students from Years 9 and 10 the opportunity to spend a week in Tanzania in the first week of March 2015 to continue the great work that is ongoing in developing these facilities and educational opportunities, as well as providing an exciting educational experience and an insight into life in East Africa for those selected to go.

The work undertaken in Tanzania complements the valuable community service work undertaken by students here in China on a weekly basis at a local migrant school and at the Huaxin Rehabilitation Centre, as well as through the Community Action Service (CAS) trip to Vietnam and Cambodia. BISS Puxi students are making a significant contribution to community service projects aimed at supporting less privileged children in Shanghai and beyond and we are currently working to develop further opportunities for the BISS Puxi community to make a difference.

The Nord Anglia Education family of schools is helping others to thrive, both at their thirty one schools around the world and also through local and global initiatives and we are proud to be a part of it.
