Shakespeare’s Birthday Event

24 April 2014

William Shakespeare, without doubt the most influential and perhaps the greatest writer of all time, was 450 years old this week.

  • Shakespeare Birthday at BISS Puxi 2014

Here at the BISS Puxi English Faculty we decided to enlist all of Year 9 (and two special guests from Year 10) to showcase their drama skills in numerous scenes from the plays of William Shakespeare. The English and Drama classes have joined forces in the past two months to bring together these performances and bring the words and actions of the ‘Bard’ to our auditorium.

The classes chose the following dramas to perform: The Merchant of Venice, The Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth and Much Ado about Nothing. The Year 10 students performed soliloquys from Anthony and Cleopatra and Richard the Third. The students were nervous and excited by the prospect of performing in front of their peers, so I thought I would up the pressure and invite all of Year 8 to watch too! Well, they will be doing it next year so the experience would be good for them.

The performances began and the audience showed their appreciation with much laughter and of course the ‘dessert’ of all actors: applause and lots of it. This event held the audience’s attention not only because of the fine acting, direction and inventive use of lighting and props, but crucially to the exquisite language and imagery of Shakespeare’s words. This day was intended as a celebration of William Shakespeare and an opportunity for many of our students to speak his words in action and I’m sure he would have been proud of our students’ efforts. The auditorium was buzzing after the performances and the students clearly had a wonderful experience.

We thank you William Shakespeare.
