This group has been working in collaboration with myself and Alfredo the Chef to look at how we can further improve our school meal service for our students. It has been a really positive process with the parent reps gathering suggestions and ideas from the parent community and also observing and sampling food in the Dining Hall on different days. Armed with all this feedback, some small changes have already been made that will have a big impact on the dining experience for the children and we are planning some more changes for the new school year.
To date the salad bar has been lowered to allow easier access for the children and the salad items separated to allow students to select what they like rather be compelled to take a pre-mixed salad. The packed lunches are being prepared a little differently with the salad for the sandwiches being put into a side container to be put into the sandwich just before eating to avoid the soggy sandwiches that children complained about. They also now have a lovely little salad pot of easy to eat cherry tomatoes and carrot sticks as part of their packed lunch.
Alfredo is looking at different bread suppliers and the parent reps will be doing some sampling in the coming weeks so we can ensure that we have the best bread choices. Where possible, the sauces are now being served separately from the meat, fish or pasta and we are trying to ensure that the menus are a little lighter for the hot summer days. We are also looking at the balance and variety of menus, making billing and lunch payment easier, food sourcing and also the dining environment and how staff can help children to make sensible choices and behave appropriately in the Dining Hall.
The committee will continue to meet and they are keen to ensure that they are representing your ideas. To help this process, they have prepared a questionnaire that they would like your support in completing. This will be sent via the room parent network and the Food Committee Reps will be available in the playground next week for you to chat with. We do encourage you to make positive suggestions and where possible we will try to take these on-board.
In this large and diverse school community, we may not be able to meet every individual preference but we can certainly work together towards making great lunchtimes at BISS Puxi. Thanks for your support with this process!
