Students’ Fundraising Efforts Help Local Children at Huaxin Centre

09 June 2014

For the past two years we have been supporting the Huaxin Recovery and Education Institution for Disabled Children through visits from staff and pupils, raising awareness of the centre and its work to the whole school community.

  • Money raised by BISS Puxi students is donated to Huaxin Centre
  • Our Vice Principal was joined by Chinese Government officials at the ceremony to mark children's day in Shanghai
  • Our Vice-Principal was interviewed for Chinese television about the centre

Vice-Principal, Stuart White, and Dan Shrewsbury, Year 6 Class Teacher, presenting the BISS Puxi donation to the Huaxin Centre and Mr White being interviewed for Chinese television.

As well as raising awareness, we have organised and carried out fundraising activities at different times in the year to raise funds to donate to the centre.

Last year we held a fundraising week towards the end of the school year and Year 6 operated in groups to apply themselves to different sporting disciplines to raise money. These included a sponsored swim, a football penalty competition and a basketball free throw tournament.  Year 6 also held a bake sale and sold cakes and biscuits at break and lunch times to children in both the primary and secondary campuses.  From these initiatives we raised over 30,000RMB and donated the money to the centre for use wherever they needed it the most.

We also took some pupils and parents to the centre to meet the families and children whom we were supporting in order to raise awareness of the important and committed work that Sun Hua, the centre founder, and her volunteers undertake.

Last week, we were lucky enough to attend a ceremony at the Huaxin Centre to mark Children’s Day and Disability Awareness Month here in China. We presented a cheque for the results of the children’s fundraising efforts and met the children at the centre. It was great to see the development that the children have made during their time at Huaxin and they all seemed to be very happy with the fact that we hope to continue our association in the future.
