ECA Spotlight: Medolescents

09 September 2014

ECAs are not only run by teachers. In the past one of our Year 13 students has run a badminton ECA and this year one of our Year 12 students has set up his own ECA for future doctors, paramedics and nurses: the Medolescents! Hyun Jin Kim tells us more about his ECA and what he hopes to achieve through it.

Medolescents is a term that I created for my ECA which mixes medic and adolescents. The Medolescents club will be the best club for the future doctors, paramedic and nurses at our school.

The goal of our ECA

The Medolescents wants to give anyone who is interested in a career in medicine more insight into their dream job. The purpose of this club is not to make the club members doctors, but is to make them much more interested in their future field of studies through various experiments and discussions. Therefore, anyone who has any interest in medicine as a field of study may join in the club. In addition, this club wants to encourage students to be healthier through various different activities.

What will we do?

One of the fundamentals of medicine is biology. Medolescents members will build up their biological knowledge through club activities, which will be necessary for their future studies in medicine. Within club time, students will not only study specific illnesses, but also explore scientific facts related to those illnesses. The methods will involve some passive learning, researched by the club leader (me!), but most of the activities will be active, through using interactive programmes, photos and videos. During the sessions, students will also debate ethical issues such as plastic surgery, thereby developing our opinions on these topics. Through these activities, Medolescents will develop students’ interest in and passion for their dream jobs.

When will we meet?

Medolescent members will meet every Thursday during ECA time. We can’t wait to get started!
