Our Principal Writes

29 October 2015

With the onset of autumn, we have enjoyed some glorious mild sunny weather and I am sure there is some more good weather to come, but temperatures are starting to fall.

  • Children in Playground

There continues to be lots of great work going on and much to enjoy and celebrate in all areas of school life.

However, it is also at this time of term when we just need to remind people about community spirit and  the importance of setting a good example and in particular in terms of abiding by rules and procedures that we have put in place for everyone’s benefit and to make the school run smoothly .

The famous author and educator James Baldwin once famously wrote:

‘Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.’

It is therefore very important that we as adults set the right example for the children in our care. I am very grateful to the vast majority of you who wear helmets when travelling to school on your motorbikes, bikes and scooters and set the right example. However it still amazes me how many choose not to wear helmets. We insist for very good reason that students wear helmets when they travel in by bike or even on a skateboard. There is, of course, overwhelming evidence  that this safety measure saves lives and therefore I would greatly appreciate it if the small minority of parents who do not wear helmets would reflect on this and reconsider the importance of setting a good example to the children. There have unfortunately been fatalities on the roads amongst the international student population of Shanghai and we remain committed to educating our students to stay safe on their bikes.

The same is true in terms of the traffic management in the controlled area outside the school. We have in place a long standing system designed to separate the cars, bikes and pedestrians and thus to keep people safe as they drop off and pick up their children. Our team of guards work very hard to keep good order and keep the traffic flowing. Once again, a small minority of drivers are not following the guidelines and the directions of the security, which means that the system breaks down and on occasions, safety is compromised. It is vitally important that parents and their drivers set a good example and accept the system which might not be convenient for everyone, but is designed to keep all members of our community safe.

Finally the change of seasons is also a time when school uniform standards can slip a little. The children are very proud to be students at BISS Puxi and most of them understand and fully appreciate that we pride ourselves on being a smart school. Indeed visitors very often compliment our students on how well they behave and how well they present themselves. Please help your children to make the right decisions, in particular regarding outer garments. The school sweaters and school fleeces provide most of the extra warmth they will need on all but the coldest days and when necessary can be supplemented by monochrome dark overcoats.

On a much lighter note I would like to congratulate the PTA on the success of the “Touch of Sparkle” Ball the weekend before last. It was yet another example of the great work that the PTA do in bringing people together and creating  opportunities to build friendships in the community. I hope you were able to attend. The next big event run jointly by our Year 12 students and the PTA is the Christmas Fayre which takes place on Saturday 28 November. It is a fantastic event for all of the family and I know that the PTA would be very pleased to hear from anyone who might be able to help in preparation for or during the event.
