Creative Minds at Work

26 November 2015

This week we have all enjoyed the wonderful Art Exhibition presented by the Year 3 and Year 6 children. We have been marvelling at a whole range of art on display including pencil portraits, still life, lino prints, pointillism, photographic art and colourful abstract designs.

  • Art Exhibition
  • Art Exhibition

These have been produced with the inspiration of some great artists such as Hockney, Kolwitz and Klee to name but a few. Yesterday in a Year 2 classroom, I was shown sketches of Gaudi inspired buildings, and this is not forgetting the wonderful Winter Wonderland scenes waiting to be selected for our Christmas displays.

Art plays a valued part in our curriculum, here at BISS Puxi. We know that the study of Art and artists is important in helping children understand about culture in general, and in a place and time in particular. At a deeper level this can also help children understand about different societies and what is valued.

But the experience of producing Art has also great merit. When watching children in the Art room, the first things you notice are enjoyment and engagement; often a light-hearted sharing of ideas as children work together. You can also see concentration and attention to detail in action, when children are focussed on improving and putting in huge effort to present their very best work. The Art room buzzes as a place of creativity, where children learn skills to help them express themselves in different ways, and where originality is encouraged and explored. Children are always keen to go to the Art room; it is a special place!

For some children this all comes naturally, for others through perseverance and hard work.  However the benefit is always seen in the sense of achievement that all children feel when they complete a piece of work they have taken pride in. What a rich variety of Art is on show in our school and what talented children we have. Come and enjoy it!
