It was hard not to get swept up in the euphoria of the Rugby World Cup and on the back of our Q&A last week with members of the BISS Lions Rugby team, we sat down with Head of BISCAP and Rugby at BISS Puxi, Mr Fudge and asked him a few questions about the Rugby programme at BISS Puxi and his own experience at coaching and playing Rugby.
What is your role with regards to the Rugby programme at BISS Puxi?
I oversee the rugby programme at BISS Puxi, coaching all the teams from u9 – u18. I run the D1 at U18 and the u15 team on matchdays, but coach all the teams during the week. We also have teaching staff who work with certain teams including Mr Hudspith, Mr Rhodes, Mr Foster and Mr Jones.
How many different nationalities play Rugby at BISS Puxi?
Currently in the U18 we have 12 different nationalities and last year we had 18 across all age groups.
Can students who’ve never played Rugby previously join the BISS Lions Rugby teams?
Absolutely. I hope that we can generate a lifelong interest in the sport and I encourage anybody who wants to have a go at the sport to come along to ECA’s and learn the game.
Are BISS Lions Rugby players expected to be of a certain height/body type to play the sport?
The great thing about Rugby is how different positions all require different body types. From small scrum halves to big prop forwards, Rugby has a position for everyone. If you look at the current U18 squad, there are real differences amongst the lads. Also people change position as they mature at different rates.
What has been your most memorable moment coaching the BISS Lions?
We have been lucky enough to enjoy lots of success across all the age groups, with multiple unbeaten teams last year in particular. Winning SISAC and ACAMIS tournaments are memorable, however the most memorable moment is seeing the development in the lads.
We have a number of our players who have not only developed as players but are now employed by a local club as coaches. This is as pleasing as is the playing success we have enjoyed.
Can you tell us more about your experience in coaching and playing Rugby?
In the UK I coached my school teams and the county side. In terms of playing, I was fortunate to enjoy some success playing county rugby and a good standard of club rugby. My playing highlight was undoubtedly the 3 years at Durham University. The professionalism towards the sport was outstanding and I was lucky enough to train and play with several players who have gone on to play at the highest level.
Thank you Mr Fudge for taking the time to sit down with us and we wish the BISS Lions all the very best for the year ahead.
Next week we will have a Q&A with Deputy Head of Secondary, Mr Rickford who recently joined BISS Puxi in August 2015.
If you have any questions you would like to ask Mr Rickford on his career to date or how he likes to unwind on weekends, please feel free to email me and I will look to include them in my Q&A session with him early next week.
