Exciting Experiences With The Shanghai Dutch School

11 February 2015

The Shanghai Dutch School is always keen to create as many exciting experiences for our students as possible, not just as part of the curriculum, but also as with after school social activities that give the students the chance to use their Dutch in a social context . The past few weeks have been filled with thrilling activities and there is more to come. Chris Samson tells us about what they’ve been up to…

Harmen van Straaten Visit

On Thursday 29 and Friday 30 January the famous, award winning Dutch author and illustrator Harmen van Straaten visited Shanghai Dutch School at BISS Puxi. Harmen van Straaten is very famous in The Netherlands and beyond for his illustrations, children’s books and adult books. He has written more than 50 books and illustrated over 300! He has won different national and international awards and literary prices, including a Golden Apple from the Biennale in Bratislava and a Grand Prix of Sankei Shimbun in Japan.

At BISS Puxi he organised workshops for our Primary and Secondary students and a Master Class for the Dutch and Belgian parents. The students learned how to draw animals starting with just an egg-shaped figure. They learned how to begin a story and where to find inspiration. They also acted out one of his books about a little boy Tim, who goes on a journey to Timbuktu.

The children and parents utterly enjoyed Harmen van Straaten’s visit and who knows… maybe one of our many young talents will become as big a star as Harmen!

Overnight Camp at the Shanghai Aquarium

On Friday 6 February the students of Shanghai Dutch School made a special trip to the Shanghai Aquarium in Lujiazui, Pudong. We didn’t just visit the Aquarium and its museum but we camped overnight below the sharks, sting rays and many other exotic fishes of the Aquarium’s highlight: the fish tunnel.

After our arrival at 6 pm we got a tour and learned a lot about the different fish and their natural habitats. We visited the penguins, touched the rays and fed the fish. At around 8pm it was time to set up our camp in the fish tunnel. Imagine sleeping beneath a sky filled with the many wonders of the sea! It certainly was a thrilling experience never to be forgotten.

Reading Marathon and the Dutch Film Festival

Every year, as part of our cultural programme, Shanghai Dutch School organises a Film Festival, starring the latest Dutch movies. This year the Dutch Film Festival will take place on Friday 27 February. In order to create a true cinema experience our students will raise money with the annual Reading Marathon which will start this week. Students are encouraged to read a Dutch book aloud for parents, siblings, grandparents and other relatives live, via Skype or FaceTime or in a phone call. For every page they read they are being sponsored. The money is used to buy popcorn and other cinema-style snacks. If the students raise enough money, we might even be able to buy pizza!
