Off to Tanzania!

27 February 2015

Tonight 34 students from Years 9 and 10 are off on a trip of a life time to Tanzania. They will travel to Arusha in Northern Tanzania where they will take part in local community projects and explore the Tanzanian environment and culture.

  • Students from The British International School Shanghai are travelling to Tanzania tonight!

Students will get to know children from the local community through working with the Huruma Orphanage and will also have the opportunity to contribute to the Maua Primary School by teaching some English lessons.

They will also take part in a safari exploring the stunning savannah landscape and wildlife, as well as learning about the history of the slave trade and how the legacy of colonial rule continues to effect development in Africa.

You can keep up with what they’re doing on their Twitter and Instagram accounts and we will be posting on our regular school social accounts too, as well as posting daily blog posts as often as we can, depending on the internet link up in the camp.

This fantastic opportunity will provide a very real life experience for our students, equipping them with essential skills, experiences and dispositions that will be greatly advantageous in future work and higher education. They will build confidence, independence, leadership skills, work as part of a team, manage their own time and develop resilience, persistence and resourcefulness.

The group have done a lot of preparation for their trip including a huge amount of fund raising with bake sales, stalls at the Christmas Fair and putting on the BISS Has Got Talent and Silent Auction event.

They have managed to raise in excess of 150,000RMB, all of which will go towards projects at the Seeway Orphanage and the Imbaseni Primary School to fund ventures such as the construction of goat sheds and community solar systems, building community dispensaries and nursery schools as well as water wells.

We wish them all the best on their adventure and look forward to hearing all about it!
