Fantastic results for BISS Puxi at the North East Asian Mathematics Competition

19 March 2015

We recently hosted the FOBISIA Primary Maths Challenge here at BISS Puxi, and last weekend it was the turn of our secondary mathematicians, 11 of whom eagerly set off to Nanjing to test their mathematical and collaborative skills at the North East Asian Mathematics Competition. Corinna Graham, who led the trip, tells us how they got on.

A total of 19 schools and 114 students participated in this prestigious and fun event. The competition consisted of three parts: an individual round, a team round and a buddy-team round, in which each student was paired with five other students, all from different schools.

They had to solve long challenging Mathematical problems during the three days, including completing a Maths trail through the temple area of Sheshan Qixia. In the Technological challenge, the teams had to build a bridge with the longest span and the ability to carry 500g using just paper, tape and string. They also had to construct a glider that was able to fly the longest distance.

In the team competition the students had to attempt to answer 12 very challenging Mathematical problems within one hour. The team competition also included an energizer round, where speed counted to get the most correct answers within an hour.

There was a winner for each individual event, an overall school winner for each team event and an overall winner of the competition.

Our students did outstandingly in the buddy-team round, which showed that they are exceptional team players, who were able to work with strangers, form a team and solve problems. Overall best school in the buddy-team round went to our second team: Yoseph Kim, Zieho Choi, Joseph Izumi, Min Ju Kwak and Kaiwen Yeoh. They received a trophy – well done!

Overall best buddy-team went to Brian Kim and he also came 2nd in the Maths trail. One of our teams also came second in the team round with Brian Kim, Harvey Yuen and Hyun Woo Kim. This is one of the most challenging rounds. Hyun Woo also won a first place prize in the Math trail with his team. In the Tech challenge Yoseph Kim from Year 7 won 1st place with his group. What an outstanding result for the youngest competitor in the competition.

A special mention must go to the outstanding performance of Zieho Choi, a very unassuming Year 10 student – but his Mathematics skills beat everyone! He scored 45 out of 50 points in the individual round and won a 1st place trophy, which put him at the top of all the students in North East Asia in this age group. A fantastic result for Zieho.

The rest of our team also did very well in the individual round: Brian Kim came 6th, Hyun Woo came 13th, Harvey Yuen 38thand Yoseph Kim in Year 7 came 42nd out of 114 students. Min Ju Kwak, Kaiwen Yeoh, Efje Boulnois, Kai Emanuele Richelmy, Eduard Bodea and Yosei Izumi scored 65th – 94th place. The BISS Puxi team is showing lots of promise for the 2016 NEAMC competition in Shanghai and in Tokyo in 2017!
