Celebrating Shakespeare’s Birthday

12 May 2015

It was Shakespeare’s birthday in April and we celebrated with some Shakespearean performances from Year 9 and then with Shanghai expat theatre company, Urban Aphrodite, coming in to give us a lightening speed rendition of all of Shakespeare’s plays in just 90 minutes! Gemma Treeby, Head of English, tells us about the Year 9 performances and how they adapted Shakespeare for the modern day.

This April we continued the BISS Puxi tradition of all Key Stage 3 classes studying a Shakespeare text. To celebrate the great man, Year 9 took on the challenge of creating class performances to entertain the rest of Key Stage 3 on Friday 24 April, the day after his birthday – but as there were no official records of his birthdate we don’t actually know for sure!

As you would expect from Shakespeare, the show was a colourful mix of Chicago gangsters, life size toys, cheerleaders and of course some fantastic cross dressing. Year 9s had also re-written key scenes in modern language and added lots of physical comedy which really brought the spirit of Shakespeare to life and led to a lot of audience participation – very much in keeping with original Shakespearean performances. Well done Year 9, the Bard would have been proud!
