Sports Report: Outstanding Young Athletes at the Under 11 FOBISIA Games

21 May 2015

Effort, determination, perseverance, sportsmanship, teamwork - these are all words that describe the qualities shown by the amazing students who represented BISS Puxi at the FOBISIA U11 Sports Games held in Manila last weekend.

These 38 students from Years 4, 5 and 6 were selected to participate across four sports; T-ball, Athletics, Football and Swimming. They were competing against five other highly competitive and skilled teams from across Asia and the competitions spanned three long, very hot and action packed days.

Every one of our students excelled as individuals, performing at a very high level and with many taking medal positions in the athletics and swimming events. There were some incredible performances that showcased youth sport at its highest level and clearly some of our young athletes and swimmers will build on these successes to compete at even higher levels as they grow up.  Special congratulations to our medal winners who gave outstanding performances in a highly competitive field of young people.

In the team events the students worked co-operatively and demonstrated great team working skills – using each other’s strengths; encouraging and supporting each other; celebrating their collective achievements and also being supportive in defeat and disappointment. Our T-ball results demonstrated that we have greatly improved our skills in this sport since last year’s tournament. The students clearly grew in confidence and skill with each match and the scores reflected this determination to fight until the end of each and every match. Our Year 5 team fought their way to a gold medal with Years 4 and 6 missing out by just a few runs.  In football our students demonstrated very high level skills and outstanding teamwork which resulted in a gold medal for our Year 5 Boys, a bronze for the Year 6 Girls (missing out on silver on goal difference) and hard fought battles that just narrowly missed medals for our other teams.

Throughout the Championships I was highly impressed with the students and their positive attitudes. They have worked incredibly hard over the last term to train for their events and approached this tournament with determination. They were physically and mentally pushed and each child showed that they could cope, learn and grow in this highly competitive environment. Most of all they had a fantastic learning experience and thoroughly enjoyed being part of this BISS Puxi team sporting event.

Thanks must go to all the coaches who worked with the students and positively supported them on this trip. Huge thanks also to all the parents who have supported their children throughout their training and to those who came along to Manila and lost their voices screaming from the sidelines. Your engagement has made this a wonderful example of home-school partnerships and we loved that you are ‘Part of the Pride’!

I know that there are lots of other BISS Puxi students who participate throughout the year in sports at all levels and some students who desperately wanted to be chosen for this event but missed out on selection. As a school we want to continue to build on our sports provision to ensure that we can provide exciting opportunities for all children to develop a life-long love of sport and to be the best that they can be!
