Year 6 in the Science Lab

05 May 2015

As part of their Themed Learning unit on Healthy Living, Year 6 have been in the Science Lab this week testing common breakfast foods for fat, starch (carbohydrate) and protein. Their teacher Sarah Phillips, explains the benefits to our students of having facilities like our primary Science Lab.

  • Year 6 students at the British International School Shanghai, Puxi study different food types in the primary science lab

Students were excited to work in a real Science Lab, as it meant they got to wear lab coats and safety goggles, and also work with equipment and chemicals that they would usually need to wait until secondary school to use. Having access to a Science Lab in our primary school is fantastic as it makes it possible to conduct a wider range of experiments that would either be too dangerous or too difficult to do in the classroom.

During the experiment, the students put samples of milk, wholemeal bread and cereal into test tubes and then added specific chemicals to each. If the food contained the substance they were testing for (fat, starch or protein), a chemical reaction would occur, resulting in the food in the test tube changing colour.  Students were able to identify that foods rich in starch and protein were ideal breakfast foods as they provided the body with slow burning energy and help keep our cells healthy.

We are looking forward to doing more experiments and activities in both the Science Lab and the Primary Kitchen as part of our Healthy Living topic in the coming weeks.
