A Year in the Global Classroom

25 June 2015

Throughout the year our students have been using the Global Classroom to expand their learning and connect with other students around the world from our family of 34 other Nord Anglia Education schools. Global Classroom Primary Coordinator, Ian Broadbent, and some secondary students round up the year for us in the Global Classroom.

Last week we celebrated all the successes we have had in the Global Classroom this year. We kicked off with the ‘Jurgen Gladbach’ projects: a mystery challenge set for us by education team at Nord Anglia Education Head Office.  Over the course of the year we have completed all three tasks set for us.  Sena Kuday completed a wonderful embroidery project to promote our school in the international world; this was followed by the completion of the unfinished symphony by Edward Lee, Thor Christoffersen Hochman, Leon Palmgren and Freyha Khogali which was then performed by Year 4. This project was then finished off by finding 50 ways in which we could travel to the moon and the BISS Astronauts then made a fantastic video.

We then celebrated the success of getting two of our students’ short stories published in the Global Classroom Anthology which is currently being printed.

We finally celebrated the successful launch this year of the passports within the primary Global Classroom and wrapped it up with over 50 students achieving the Bronze award, 15 Silver awards and 13 achieving the elusive Gold award. Well done to the students who won the Gold, these students are listed below:

  • Jiwon Choi
  • Marketa Janasova
  • Hyeon-seo Kwon
  • Margaret Banks-Hehenberger
  • Gracie Elliott
  • Angie Ho
  • Benjamin Hsin
  • Aleeza Sherwani
  • Lucas O'Riordan
  • Leela Rao
  • Samuel Alvarez Zhao
  • Hugo Noublanche
  • Joey Wee

Here are some testimonies from some of our students:

Freya McKenzie, our Global Classroom Voice Student Leader, Year 10
One of the many wonderful things at this school is the Global Classroom online learning environment which allows Nord Anglia students from all around the world to interact with each other and partake in educational activities and challenges.

One of the largest draws for students are the many competitions available to participate in. This year competitions such as the Creative Writing Challenge, is open to students from ages 8 to 18 and has been running for several years. The finalists are placed into a Global Classroom Anthology, for this year our school is very proud to have 2 finalists.

Global Classroom also had the very exciting Open Mic competition, an event for Secondary students to showcase their musical abilities. The best submissions are then chosen to be on the Global Classroom Open Mic Compilation album.

Another one of the Global Classroom’s many opportunities is the Illustration Competition in which students can submit their artwork based on this year’s theme of “Somewhere Unforgettable”.  The Finalists are then put into the Global Classroom book along with the Creative writing pieces.

And of course one of the key elements of the Global Classrooms competition section is the regular maths challenges, open to all secondary students.

These competitions allow students from all around the world to be involved in fun and education activities and to engage in friendly competitions and we hope that next year even more students will partake in the exciting and engaging challenges.

Kelly Ragyeom Kim, Year 11
Global Classroom is an opportunity for us all to partake in the global community of all 35 of Nord Anglia Education’s established schools from around the world. For us international students, it is the most suitable and enjoyable way to interact with other global-minded students and to prepare ourselves for the 21st century society.

Arush Garg and Thomas Roberts in Year 7
Global classroom is a wonderful online space to share ideas and experiences. From debating to projects like the Big Challenge, there's always something to do. One of the best ways to share thoughts is to open or write in a forum. From whether or not google glass is better than the hololens, to your favourite movie, the forum section has the most diverse selection of topics. The forums are located in 'Have Your Say', which also includes mathematical brain teasers and a space taken over by students from around the world: The 'Student Zone'.
