A Year of Helping Others at BISS Puxi

08 June 2015

We have had a wonderfully enriching and inspiring year of charitable initiatives here at BISS Puxi this year.

  • CAS students at the British International School Shanghai Raising Awareness for Giving as part of their IB Diploma Programme
  • Students from the British international School Shanghai, Puxi sorting clothes donations for River of Hearts.
  • Students at the British International School Shanghai Puxi raise money all week to support Nepal
  • Giving Tree 2014

Some images of charitable work from across the year.

Our first event takes us all the way back to September and our first Clothes Collection for River of Hearts during Raising Awareness for Giving (RAG) Week. This initiative continued with three further collections over the course of the three terms.  As a community we managed to fill over 100 boxes for those people all around China who have been affected by natural disasters in some way.  This charity has greatly appreciated all of our support. During RAG Week the Year 12s ran a variety of activities throughout the school to raise awareness for seven different charities that our school will be supporting throughout the year.

Towards Christmas time we looked forward to our annual Giving Tree initiative.  This year we subscribed to change the lives of 600 young migrant children and their teachers at Christmas.  All bags were filled and the initiative was supported by staff, children and parents.  The faces of the children at Chen's Dam School lit up in expectation and anticipation once we had arrived and their gasps of joy and excitement at what they had received made all the effort worthwhile.

The New Year brought us to our Jayia’s Animal Rescue and Bow Meow Shanghai awareness day through assemblies presented to Key Stage 2.  We then followed this up in May and June with our coin and toys and treats donation initiatives.  Moksh, Oskar, Julie and Freyha from Class 6S worked incredibly hard to count all proceeds alongside explaining what the organisations do to parents after school.  We managed to raise approximately 6,000RMB alongside a great deal of awareness and support for these wonderful Shanghai-based volunteer charities.

The secondary Migrant School ECA has been visiting the Qingpu Xiu Long Migrant School weekly, putting on different educational and fun activities for the children there – a really beneficial and enriching experience for both the migrant school and the BISS Puxi students. The English department also raised money to buy the school some bilingual books with their World Book Day costume day.

And of course we were all affected by the tragic earthquakes in Nepal, which will certainly affect the country for years to come.  So as a school we all collaborated in double quick time to form a response group that operated to raise as much money as possible over a three week period.  From the design and sale of badges and bracelets, to busking at lunchtimes, to staff dressing up and even shaving their heads, everyone worked to their limit to help generate over 80,000RMB for those in need.  Pupils gave up their lunchtimes to sell items in support, cake sales raised tremendous amounts of funds and the amount of awareness raised made us all realise how fortunate we are to have to opportunity to help.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in any way throughout the year.  We look forward to future initiatives.
