Great turn out at KS1 Maths & Literacy Information Workshops

10 September 2015

During the literacy and maths Parent Workshops, we talked about a number of ways parents can support their children’s literacy at home.

Reading with your child at home and then talking about the text, in order to check and deepen their understanding, has a major impact on their learning. It not only improves their reading and comprehension skills, but develops their speaking and listening and children who read widely at home for enjoyment, generally do better and are more confident at writing too.

This should not be a long and arduous task, but 5-10 minutes one or two times a day, when children can enjoy reading something that interests them with you. On Monday and Tuesday, from 3:30- 4:30, parents can pop into the library with their children and select up to 5 books to take home for two weeks. Children really love this and want to come back week after week. In addition to this, talking about the learning that is happening in class, so the children can begin to explain their understanding or even their homework will allow them to consolidate their learning. Try to do as much of this as possible in English so they are further reinforcing the correct vocabulary at home.

Earlier this week in Primary we hosted a Parent Workshop. Over the course of two mornings, around 140 people attended with the sessions focusing on how we teach Maths and the importance of problem solving. We also distributed our new guide which focuses on how you can help your child at home with their Maths. If you would like a copy of this guide, please ask at the Primary School reception desk. The guide received positive feedback, with parents commenting that they are looking forward to trying out some of the ideas at home.

Any feedback on the guide would be greatly appreciated and it would enable us to better support you to assist your child at home. We look forwarding to seeing you all again at more Maths events in the future.

An example of some of the ideas shared with the parents:

Explore Shanghai and take every opportunity to practice your children’s Maths skills.

Encourage your children to explain their thinking when answering Maths problems.

Use the Maths guide book to help you plan fun Maths activities.

Play Maths games.

Bake, measure and construct with your children at home.

Let your children use the MyiMaths website to consolidate their learning.
