Under 15s Training Hard for FOBISIA Games

17 September 2015

Earlier this week I met with Doireann Bregazzi-Nevin (PE Teacher and FOBISIA Co-ordinator) to find out more about the Under 15 FOBISIA games which will be hosted in November in Hong Kong. A squad, specially selected for their sporting prowess, will lead the student charge from BISS Puxi in the hope of bringing glory back to Shanghai.

Could you tell me more about FOBISIA and what it stands for?

FOBISIA is an organisation for British Schools in Asia. Every year our school competes in the FOBISIA games where a team of up to 18 boys and 18 girls travel to the hosting school and compete in a variety of sports.

Is there an age limit on participation?

There are 3 different age categories that compete at FOBISIA. The Under 15 games are held in November every year. This is for students in Years 9, 10 and 11 who are under the age of 15 on 01 August 2015. The Under 13 games are held in March/April and are for Year 7 and 8 students who are under the age of 13 on 1 August 2015. The Primary school Under 11 games, held in May, are separated into 3 categories for Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6.

Where is the competition generally held?

Each year a different school in each group hosts the games. Our group has schools from Korea, Hong Kong, China, Thailand, Brunei and The Philippines. This year the Under 15 competition will be held in Hong Kong, the Under 13’s will be held in Korea and the Under 11’s will be in Thailand.

What competitions do the teams participate in?

The Under 15 and Under 13 teams have competitions in Football, Basketball, Athletics and Swimming. The Under 11s compete in T-ball, Football, Athletics and Swimming.

How can BISS students try out for the team?

Under 15s and Under 13s will be observed playing football and basketball in PE lessons. Their PE teachers will use this to formulate a score against set criteria. Students will also be invited to attend a swimming and athletics trial after school. All of the data will be combined to calculate the strongest team.

Sounds very much like the film Moneyball. What’s the latest news on the Under 15s?

We have already selected 14 boys and 15 girls from Years 9 and 10 to compete in this year’s Under 15s FOBISIA competition. They are already busy training 9 hours a week for football, basketball, athletics and swimming! The team are starting to link together really well and are really looking forward to the games in less than 6 and a half weeks! This is the team list and we wish them well for their training and for the games!
