Volleyball Season Gets Underway

02 September 2015

On Saturday 29 August, the BISS Lions U19 volleyball teams had their first competitive games in an away fixture against some well drilled SAS Puxi teams. The BISS teams had very little time to prepare for their opening fixtures this week in comparison to their opponents, but held their own and performed very competitively.

BISS Lions Boys Division 1 Volleyball

SAS Puxi V BISS Lions 2-1 (22-25, 25-17, 15-12)

The boys played outstanding volleyball throughout their nail-biter of a match against the Eagles and looked confident through aggressive attacking play which involved Gustavo Parucker and Jasper De Meyer.  The Lions took the first set 25-22 which put them in a commanding position but some strong hitting from the Eagles number 18 secured the second set for SAS 25-17.  The third set was close again but eventually went SAS’ way 15-12.  The Lions had been beaten but had played an excellent match and one all the boys should be proud of.

BISS Lions Girls Division 1 Volleyball

SASPX1 V BISS Lions 2-0 (25-6, 25-19)

In a tricky start to the season against a team who are expected to win the league, the girls lost the first set convincingly on the scoreboard.  What the scoreboard does not reflect is the way in which each point was won.  The girls played a true form of volleyball passing to the setter on the right and lining up a spike for one of the big hitters on the team. The girls communicated on court very well, but just fell short when it came to finishing defensive shots.

SASPX2 V BISS Lions 1-2 (25-16, 14-25, 6-15)

Game two of the day for the girls was against a second string SAS Puxi team. By this point the Lions were fully awake and warmed up after their first game.  Hungry for the win, they came out with a roar.  Lead by Barbara Asfour, BISS served, volleyed and communicated well, but again, lost the first set on small errors and being drawn into the net.  The girls’ attitude was outstanding from that point as they never let their heads go down and continued the fight to win the second set.  In the third set, the momentum was with the Lions from start to finish.  Barbara took the service with 5 points to go and closed the game out with four aces.

It is always a pleasure to see such grit and determination in young athletes and we are looking forward to the Lions’ first home fixture of the season this Tuesday 1 September 2015 in the Secondary Sports Hall.  All are welcome to come and support the Lions.
